Samiksha Goyal

I am a philosophy researcher and educator. I am currently a Postdoctoral Fellow with the Ethics and the Common Good Centre at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, US. Before this, I was with the Extending New Narratives Project at Simon Fraser University. I gained my PhD at Monash University titled Gandhi’s Anasakti Yoga, Disinterest and Moral Inquiry (abstract here) and an MPhil from University of Delhi.

My research interests lie at the intersections of virtue theory and history of philosophy. In virtue theory, I investigate detachment as a virtue, to articulate its role in moral life for balancing subjective influence and for reducing distortions in epistemic life. In Indian philosophy, I study the thought of Mohandas Gandhi in conversation with the classical texts of Hinduism and Jainism, exploring how Gandhi and these traditions contribute to contemporary debates in ethics and epistemology. My research has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as Economic and Political Weekly and Journal of Dharma Studies. You can find the details of my latest research and publications here and my upcoming talks here.

I grew up in India and moved to Melbourne, Australia for my Ph.D. and am now living in North America. My research has been made possible by the support of various fellowships and awards from the University of Delhi (India), Monash University (Australia), Extending New Narratives in the History of Philosophy Project (SSHRC, Canada). Following my PhD, I was also competitively selected for the Postgraduation Publication Award by Monash University.

Alongside my research, I have been teaching philosophy since 2016. I have taught a wide range of courses such as Critical Thinking, Applied Ethics, Ethics of Global Conflict, Moral Philosophy, and Indian philosophy in Australia at Monash University and Australian Catholic University as well as in India at various colleges of the University of Delhi.

I also serve as a Book Reviews Editor for Sophia (Springer). If you’d like your book reviewed in Sophia, feel free to get in touch.

Apart from philosophy, I often indulge in classical Indian music, hiking the mountains, painting En plein air, bird photography, and cooking my favourite food.
